The Effective Leader/Manager

Scot Scobee, MDI/MSU

Increasingly, organizations are realizing the need for leadership at all levels. Because people want to be led, not managed, managers need to develop as leaders in addition to being highly competent in functional management areas. This session is designed around the Management Competency Model based on The Leadership Challenge model by Kouzes and Posner. The Effective Leader/Manager will address the 5 key areas of managerial effectiveness and set the learning foundation for the boot camp.

Building a Foundation of Trust

Dale McCoy, MDI/MSU

When you have the responsibility of leading a team, it is important for you to trust your team members.   And it’s also important for your team members to trust you.   Mutual trust is a shared belief that you can depend on each other to achieve a common purpose.  This session will increase your awareness of common “trust traps” and provide strategies to help you create an environment in which people take risks, identify and solve problems, and work together.

Harnessing Innovative Ideas and Developing Creative Solutions

Dale McCoy & Steve Eiffert

Great ideas and innovative solutions can be all around us.  The challenge for team leaders is knowing where to look, what to listen for, and when (or how) to use the information they receive to improve work processes.  This session will explore various sources to consider when looking for ideas to spur on needed innovation and change; and share lessons learned from other innovation pioneers who achieved success by making the best use out of the information available to them.

Are You a Better Leader than a Pirate Captain

Steve Eiffert, MDI/MSU

“Are you a better leader than a pirate captain” is an entertaining look at the leadership styles of 18th century pirates. Blending both autocratic and democratic leadership they adapted themselves to a unique workforce to create highly successful organizations. These examples are compared to today’s leadership challenge of engaging and motivating both Generation X and Millennial workers.  This program illustrates how core leadership principles have not changed in the 300 years since the golden age of piracy.  Arrrg!
